A strange phenomenon has just been uncovered by observers of the college applications scene: Based on reports from college admissions officers, it appears that some affluent parents who can well afford to pay full tuition as well as room & board, are adopting the strategy of giving up custody of their children, so that they can qualify for financial aid and loans by declaring financial independence.
