The idea of a “Green New Deal” has been germinating for a little over 20 years  in the U.S. and U.K.  The name is inspired by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal in the 1930s when his administration  created a whole host of new programs and social safety legislation to lift America out of the Depression.

The basic idea of the Green New Deal is that if a country focuses on green technologies, especially clean, non-carbon-generating renewable energy, we can  effectively combat climate change.  At the same time, this idea was combined with an overarching vision of a  job-creating economic renaissance that will juice up the national economy and create wide-spread shared prosperity.  Up to the present, the Green New Deal is primarily supported by Green Party candidates, Democrats, environmental organizations, and progressive Americans.

The Green New Deal is a work in progress.  While the general mission has been presented, the details of the program and implementation have not been worked out yet.

Recent Green New Deal developments in the U.S.:

  • In November 2018:  18 Democratic members of Congress co-sponsored a proposal for a  House Select Committee on a Green New Deal that were tasked with coming up with a draft legislation in 90 days, after which the committee would work on a detailed plan to make the US “carbon neutral” through programs that would promote equality and justice.
  • February 7, 2019:  Senator Edward Markey and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez released a fourteen-page resolution[8] for their Green New Deal.  Summary of what is in this resolution (https://www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2019/2/7/18211709/green-new-deal-resolution-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-markey)
  • As of fall 2019:  This house resolution was blocked in the Senate in March 2019 through a “procedural vote,” with most Democrats voting “present,” which meant that  that there were not even enough Democratic votes, so there is no hope that it would pass the Senate because Republicans will not support it.
  • Right now, supporters of the Green New Deal such as Ocasio-Cortez, are trying another approach—they are focusing on breaking down the Green NewDeal into smaller bills on climate change and green energy jobs. (more)
