Social Media is not a substitute for real news sources

The vast majority of youth grew up being told not to believe everything they read on the internet, but now it seems that people have forgotten that advice. Individuals use social media to keep up with current events without checking actual news sources.

The concept of social media as news is concerning, mainly because what people claim on social media is not always true. This is an especially prominent problem on text-based social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, where misinformation spreads like a virus.

Everybody wants to be informed, and the intent gives people the platform to build up their facades of expertise made of generalizations and conviction. Because there are very few regulators on what people can say over social media, almost anything can be passed off as the truth, leading people to be deceived.

Misinformation can be incredibly convincing, making something that is in favor of a certain group appeal to another. Some might say it isn't worth their time to visit credible news sources when they are already on social media, but they are misguided. Being up to date on real events in the world is much more valuable than an extra 15 minutes of scrolling.

Being on social media is not always a gratifying experience. Most of the time, its cheap, quick entertainment, but checking actual news is much more beneficial and creates knowledgable members in society.
