Many reasons have been proffered to explain the high rate of mass shootings in the U.S.--mental illness, culture, etc.  But there is really just one reason:  how easy it is to obtain guns and the trenmendous number of guns in the U.S.  This research-based article goes through each reason, debunks most of them, and then proceeds to show why the number of guns is the only factor that explains why mass shootings are so prevalent in the U.S..

b.  What are 3 to 5 gun control laws you would try to pass right away if you were a legislator?

Mental illness and culture cannot explain ...Read more the number of mass shootings in the U.S. because different articles explained that a very small percentage of the mass shooters actually have mental illness. At the same time, countries most affected by mental illness have a very low rate of mass shootings. In the end, only one thing explains the number of mass shootings: the lack of control over gun regulations. b. If I were a legislator, the very first law I would change is the federal law where it legalizes the ownership of guns. The very first rulers of the country may have thought it would be a good idea to legalize guns because people would be able to "protect" themselves. However, fallout crashed down unhesitatingly and families ended up being murdered, as well as students and children attending schools dying without any protection nor self-defense. Changing this law would make a big difference, preventing future mass shootings by younger generations. Second, I would set the standard of the penalty (of illegally owning guns) very high, since this would also prevent more people from illegally owning guns. I think more police end up killing their suspects because they were trained to fire until it is certain that the suspects are dead, since no one would know if their suspect is holding a gun, ready to fire at the police anytime. This is also the aftermath of legalizing guns, making them accessible to anyone. Less
