The outbreak of the coronavirus is continuing to get worse and worse, and the number of cases around the world is only continuing to increase. This respiratory disease has impacted people everywhere, regardless of race, color, ethnicity, gender, or sexuality. Testing kits are scarce, schools and businesses are closing down, and people are confused and worried about what they are going to do during this epidemic and what might happen to their loved ones, with good reason: nearly 34,000 deaths have been reported around the world.

As most people know, the governor of California has issued a shelter in place order which effectively prohibits people from leaving their homes unless necessary. I myself haven’t been out of my home for almost two weeks due to this. Schools have also closed down, which further limits my ability to leave my home. And to be honest, I’m bored out of my mind! My teachers are still assigning homework and things to do, but it’s easy to get them finished at home without any distractions. But then, I have the rest of the day to sit around and just binge watch Netflix. And while it sounds like that’s amazing, with this recent outbreak, I’ve realized how important social interaction is to me. While I may not like getting up early and going to school, I still miss hanging out with my friends during passing periods and lunch.

However, at the same time, this pandemic has shown us that essential tasks we complete on a daily basis can be done from home. Most students are able to continue their education from home, and schools around the area are giving out electronics such as computers for those who can’t access technology. I know that my parents are now working from home full time and still getting their jobs done, which just comes to show how much time could be saved if adults were allowed to work from home more often. But because of this, I’ve been having to spend a lot more at home with my parents, and I’m not exactly sure if that’s a good thing. Let’s just say, I’m coping. I’m figuring it out. I’m Facetiming my friends and I’m trying to maintain some sense of normality because that’s the only way we’re going to get through these tough times.

Interesting observations, Jiya, about how you have noticed that a lot of work can be done at home--perhaps after this pandemic is over, employers will realize that working from home saves time, gas, and other expenses. Most important of all, working at home may end up saving our planet, as carbon ...Read more emissions will decline precipitously! Your other observation about how you are not exactly sure about how spending a lot of time with your parents is a "good thing." Yes, that is something that people around the world are beginning to be aware of. In fact, among couples who do not have good relationships, this mandatory shelter-in-place policy has led an increase in domestic abuse. Very sad Less
