How the Coronavirus has affected my life

The Coronavirus, the mass pandemic that was unforeseen, has changed my life in many monumental ways. A major way in which the pandemic has affected my life is school cancellations. I went home one weekend from school, not knowing that I was not going to come back for possibly the rest of the school year. Having school online is a much different experience than having school in person, and the way we learn things has changed so much. “Social Distancing” is something that affects my life a lot as well. I miss leaving the house, seeing my friends, and being in a physical classroom. Additionally, in my Leadership class, we had so many planned events get canceled because of the Coronavirus. Arguably the most attended, and hyped-up event, BOTC (Battle of the Classes), was canceled due to the virus. This was very upsetting because we had worked for 3 hard months to put the event together and we saw it all come down before our eyes. It was especially upsetting to the seniors as it was their last year of this event that they have waited the whole year for.
Secondly, Coronavirus has affected sports. I enjoyed playing tennis at school and this season was going to be my best yet. Our school had also broken records this season. That all coming to an end was very saddening, especially for the seniors, to whom it was their last season. Though things like sports on a high school team don’t seem significant in comparison to the huge problem happening in the world, I think it is really the small things like this that affect people tremendously. The daily norms of life that everyone looks forward to has been stripped away, which is most saddening of all.
With all the cons of the Coronavirus, there have been some pluses. For example. I’ve found ways to make this time off productive. I have been able to get so much work done including test prep (SAT, SAT Subject Tests,AP Exams, etc.), going ahead of the class, and finding ways to give back to my community in this time. I have partnered with another high school student to make a free tutoring service where students K-12 can continue to learn. I am also working with a team of professionals on an app that can help people know which areas are most likely infected with the virus.
Though so many bad things have happened like not being able to see my friends and sports being canceled, I feel that if one looks at the situation with a different approach, they can do so much more with their time. I have heard about colleges reconsidering their expectations for incoming students who have been affected by this virus, and though it is true that some traditional things like Subject Tests are being dropped from consideration, colleges are still looking for students who used this time wisely to give back to the community, instead of wasting their time.
