COVID-19 Is an Eye-Opening Opportunity for the World

America has problems. And it’s not that any specific nation has to be perfect, but this whole pandemic situation surely has highlighted some major problems in America, as well as problems in other nations in the world.

While the coronavirus outbreak was an unforeseen catastrophe, there were still insights that could have lead to a smoother outcome. For instance, government officials and the president were already aware of the virus and its eventual outcome, meaning they could have called for an earlier national emergency, ensuring safety measures to take place a lot quicker. This in itself goes to show the problems within the U.S. government.

Besides political aspects, the U.S. displayed many flaws in its medical system as well. The U.S. is commonly known for charging vast amounts of money for healthcare. While this was already a severe problem for those who cannot afford health insurance, it proves to be even more of a problem when a highly contagious and harmful virus outbreaks. Especially for a nation as big as the U.S., healthcare shouldn’t cost someone a fortune, as a large portion of the U.S. population cannot even pay a fraction of that amount. Another problem with the U.S.’s medical system, as well as every other nation, was the lack of preparations for a global pandemic. Many influential people and experts, such as Bill Gates and Osterholm, predicted around the time of the Ebola outbreak that the next thing to severely damage the human race isn’t a war or climate change, but most likely a deadly virus. Viruses such as Ebola and MERS only marked the beginning of many deadlier and more contagious viruses to come. These warnings were not heeded by the world, which resulted in significant losses due to the coronavirus.

It is almost embarrassing how visible these flaws are to the public. Instead of looking at the coronavirus outbreak as an inevitable event, it should be followed through with reforms to better prepare the world for the next outbreak of a deadly disease.
