1. At first, I found it rather counter-intuitive that affirmative action promotes access to higher education for marginalized students. Usually when you hear anything about "taking race into account" it is marked with a bad connotation and so my initial reaction was confusion as to the ...Read more juxtaposition of these two ideas. However, after reading the article a bit more I started agreeing more with the author's opinion. The author brings up that affirmative action helps increase admission of students of color in lower classes. Not only is affirmative action helpful for students of color, but also helps other demographics of the Asian American population, such as Cambodian and Hmong Americans, get accepted more too. 2. I think that affirmative action should continue. It *might* affect my chances in getting accepted into the college I want, but I feel that it is important that the policy stays around to help less fortunate people. The second article states that affirmative action is necessary to ensure diversity by giving fair and non-discriminative access to all students of color. The first article points out in favor of affirmative action that creating a diverse community in universities will provide a community that is similar to real life, which is a benefit. 2. I think that affirmative action in college admissions should be allowed to continue because they provide a diverse community and overall allow for a diverse group of admissions into colleges.
