Adversity

An adversity I have experienced was in 8th grade, when I was deciding which high schools I would apply to. Throughout my life, my parents made it clear that Lowell, a public high school, was my only option, as it was where my brother also went. However, I was interested in private schools as well, since their campuses were nice, and most of the people at my middle school were applying to them. My parents then brought up the fact about how expensive tuition would be at private schools, costing almost the same as college tuitions. Another thing they brought up was that my brother scored in the 99th percentile for the HSPT, a test you had to take for private school admissions, and how he still did not get accepted into the one he wanted. They asked around as to why this was, and eventually his school principal said it was most likely due to the fact that he was not Catholic. Being non-Catholic myself, I imagine that the system was rigged, and finally decided to only apply to public schools, hoping that I would get into my number choice at Lowell. I did not think about any of the other public schools at that time, as it was a scary and new thought to not follow in my brother’s footsteps. Luckily enough, I was accepted into Lowell after taking a long test for admissions.
