A Time When My Work Made a Difference

One significant experience in my life where I contributed to a group effort overtime was during our church youth mission. Last summer, more than 50 of my church youth group members drove down to Ensenada, Mexico where we had the opportunity to serve the native people. While we were there, we constructed houses with the help of experienced workers and led Bible studies at churches for kids whose ages ranged from 2 to 14. I personally had the opportunity to lead some of my brothers and sisters, as our youth group was separated into small groups of 5 or 6 people. My experience in the previous mission I attended helped me to guide the younger members. Prior to the mission, I would arrange different times to meet in order to sufficiently prepare for the mission. When we met, I led discussions on what we were going to do for our Bible study and how we were going to distribute the workload. Using my interests in sports, I, with the agreement of my group members, decided to lead games that were both active and related to our bible lessons. In addition, to present our lesson in a manner that would better attract young children, our group decided to perform a puppet show. In the weeks prior to the mission, we built puppets from scratch using paper, wooden sticks, and a trifold for the stage, and we also wrote our own scripts so that the language could be easily understood by the kids. When we met the young children at the churches in Mexico, I was easily able to quickly grow close with them, as I had taken three years of Spanish at school. Through my understanding of the language, I was also able to help my group members converse with the children and feel a stronger connection to them. Overall, it was truly a blessing to be able to serve all the people in need in Ensenada as well as my small group members during the Mexico mission.
