The Power of Unity

Last Saturday, I attended an online college admission advice seminar along with my parents. It was led by a few experienced Korean adults who had no apparent connections with us. They were just a group of random people who wanted to help out fellow Koreans with the college admission process.

I gladly accepted the offer (as if I had a choice) and braced myself for quite possibly one of the most important hour-and-a-half of my life. As the clocked ticked to 3:00 P.M., I sat down to absorb all of the eye-opening aspects of the college admission process.

I expected the seminar to be full of Korean-American fellows who had mediocre Korean comprehension skills and a few teacher-like figures to give us concise tips about the admission process in English. Contrarily, I was met with a grueling two-and-a-half-hour seminar filled with abstract concepts and overly complicated Korean vocabulary. To comprehend the new materials that were constantly thrown at me, I had to pay a strict amount of attention, making sure of what I heard every time the instructors repeated it to the audience.

Despite all of this trouble, I was deeply grateful for the seminar. I finally had a sense of my near future and learned that everyone else is just as lost I am. Moreover, I experienced the power of unity and how a common goal could bring about great results from a group that had just emerged. I wasn’t able to bond with anyone in the group in any way, but that emphasized all the more how a common goal is all that is required for a group of strangers to get together and help one another.

This event did not necessarily point towards one issue that is important to me, but many. The fact that a common goal is all that is needed to accomplish something can be seen in various crucial aspects of my life, including environmental advocacy, music, education, and more.

All in all, I believe that it is important to always reach commonality when attempting new things or meeting new people in life. Connecting our hobbies and interests with other new things and people can allow everyone to work more efficiently and wholeheartedly towards important issues in our lives.
