It is important for our society to have bilingual education within the school system. The United States is one of the most diverse countries, containing many immigrants. My parents are immigrants. Most of my friends’ parents are immigrants. Growing up, although I grew up in an English-speaking family, I would have preferred to attend a bilingual school so that I would have kept in touch with my culture.

In Richard Rodriguez’s essay, Aria, he claims that when he assimilated into America and his primary language went from Spanish to English, he became distant with his family. He wondered about simple things such as whether he should call his parents mom and dad or papá or mamá (what people usually call their parents mom and dad in Spanish). His father had become silent and their family was split due to language barriers. I believe that people like Rodriguez would benefit from a bilingual education, as he would still participate in a public classroom, but still keep his private language. In his essay, Rodriguez said himself that he would have felt more comfortable adjusting to the US if his teachers spoke Spanish.

Overall, I believe that offering a bilingual education will help people assimilate into a life in the US. It will help children stay connected with their culture by speaking the language but also adjust to society, where English is a primary language needed in jobs.
