At the Ball Game

Nothing is like entering the bustling baseball stadium. Growing up in Los Angeles, there was no escaping the mob of Dodgers fans who would proudly support their city’s team, with the bright blue and white logo to be seen within five minutes of leaving the house. I grew to love the sport through playing softball for four years as a child, watching my younger brother play in T-Ball, and my dad to play with his friends as I sat in the dugout. Once I moved to San Francisco, my family’s feelings towards the team didn’t change. While everyone was sporting their black and orange Giant’s gear, we would show up to games proudly donning our white and blue.
Before attending my first Dodger’s game, my dad brought my brother and I to the local sporting goods store and we bought t-shirts and hats to wear. Arriving at the stadium was a rush. Enormous groups of people were entering the Giant’s stadium, and while being based in San Francisco, a great significant portion of fans were still wearing familiar Dodger’s swag. As my dad’s excitement grew with the crowd of Los Angelans, I grew incredibly interested and watched the game in awe.
Attending a sporting event like this as a committed fan is like a family reunion. While fans don’t know each other well or personally, there’s something that connects them all in that giant, lit stadium: a love for supporting their home team. I watched people wearing face paint, waving blue foam fingers in the air or waving flags, shouting as plays went by. Attending these sporting events is exciting in every way, whether it be yelling in unison with similar attendees, buying hot dogs, or singing Take Me Out to the Ball Game. Attending this game gave hours of anticipation, elation, and community, all over watching a sports team that we all grew up to admire.
