A Great Honor and Burden

It is a great honor and thrill, yet also a disappointment, to know that I have witnessed the most important presidential election in about 90 years. While this means that I have witnessed a great moment in the history of the United States, it also underlines the severe chasm between the Democrats and Republicans and the outrageousness of President Donald Trump’s transgressions. Even during the last few months of his presidency, Trump has made unsettling promises and endeavors that make me anxious about the transition from Donald Trump to Joe Biden.

First of all, one of the things that makes me most nervous, yet most excited, is Trump’s promise that the transition to Biden’s presidency will not be a peaceful one. On several occasions, Trump has deliberately revealed that he will use his powers to make the end of his presidency as rough as possible, with many speculating that he will refuse to leave the White House when he inevitably has to leave. While it is riveting to wonder what kind of consequences he will face when refusing to leave, it is also nerve-racking to think about the political radicalism that is to come from both political parties, especially the Republicans. Although I would love to see Trump receive harsh discipline, I would hate to see the nation become further divided due to Trump’s last-ditch effort to dump propaganda on the undereducated folk on the right.

Next, I am nervous about whether or not Biden will be able to lead the country as one united people. By all means, I am not underestimating Biden’s political capabilities. But on the same note, I do not underestimate Trump’s ability to rally the radical right. Now that FOX News has denounced Trump for his inappropriate behaviors, Trump has vowed to create his own news outlet which is likely to spread the worst of propaganda and divide the nation more than it has ever been. I believe that it is unlikely for those who have been affected by such radical political views to come back to their senses and retain the correct information on ongoing issues. For example, many of Trump’s fanatics are still in denial of the election results because of Trump’s claims that the Democrats have cheated by voting with mail-in ballots. These people will probably maintain, at least for a while, that Biden has won his presidency unethically and will likely disparage Biden all throughout his presidency.

All in all, it is unnerving to know that I have witnessed the most important presidential election in a while. Since most of my apprehensions are based on mere speculations, I hope that President-elect Joe Biden will repair Trump’s wrongdoings and lead the country through this tough pandemic.
